Job Description

General Responsibilities:
To perform, verify the accuracy of, and report results for routine and moderately complex laboratory procedures on body tissues, fluids, and other substances within a campus-based medical laboratory, in accordance with established protocols and under the direction of the laboratory supervisor. To perform reagent preparation, quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance with assistance from a Medical Technologist, Medical Lab Technician Lead or Supervisor.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Receives and prepares specimens for analysis by establishing specimen identity.
2. Documents any deviation from positive patient identification detected during the preparation, testing, and reporting of the specimen.
3. Ensures suitable specimens are received and verifies specimen integrity.
4. Performs preanalytical steps to prepare specimens for analysis according to established protocols.
5. Responsible for any special preparation, testing, and storage requirements.
6. Performs one or more classification of tests: chemical, microscopic, microbiologic, and other classifications according to established safety and technical protocols.
7. Prepares and uses proper standards and controls to ensure quality data. In conjunction with technologists, troubleshoots controls, instruments, and other problems as needed.
8. Documents actions, including the use of secondary and down-time.
9. Works in a steady, efficient manner such that an appropriate number of procedures are performed in a specified timeframe with minimal repeats.
10. Verifies test results as needed after review for clerical accuracy, clinical compatibility, and accuracy.
11. Operates instruments (mechanical, optical, photometric, automated, etc.) according to established test and quality control protocols.
12. Performs and documents routine function checks and calibrations on instruments as required to assure proper operation before and during performance of tests.
13. Performs and documents preventive maintenance on instruments and equipment as specified by the supervisor and instrument protocols.
14. Tests and documents quality control checks on reagents, instruments and procedures.
15. Assists in monitoring supplies including dating and storing new reagents as received, observing expiration dates, checking new reagents before use, and maintaining reagent log and control systems.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Pay Range: $21.80 – $28.50



Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Associate's degree in a related field required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Students in a related associate's degree program must obtain degree within nine (9) months from date of hire to classification.


Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:
Must be certified as a Medical Lab Technician (MLT) with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or with the American Medical Technologists (AMT) within fifteen (15) months of hire date. Depending on the unit/department or if the position works directly with patients, Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment.


Preferred Skills:
• Proficiency in clinical laboratory testing (hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology, microbiology, and blood bank as applicable)
• Experience operating and troubleshooting laboratory analyzers
• Knowledge of laboratory quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and regulatory standards (CLIA, CAP, OSHA)
• Accurate specimen handling, processing, and documentation
• Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR)
• Phlebotomy experience (preferred where applicable)
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Dependability, professionalism, and ethical judgment
• Ability to prioritize tasks and remain calm in a fast-paced clinical environment
