Job Description
Summary
Research Ophthalmic Technicians provide support to ophthalmologists and optometrists involved in clinical research protocols. Research Ophthalmic Technicians are able to perform many ophthalmic diagnostic tests and assessments on study participants in accordance with the study protocol and guidelines.
Job Duties
Research Ophthalmic Technicians assist with the following tests/assessments within an ophthalmology practice in relation to study participants, including but not limited to the following:
- Schedule study patients for study visits
- Operate various ophthalmic diagnostic devices
- Obtain a thorough medical history from the patient
- Assess patients’ visual acuity (both near and distance vision)
- Perform manual lensometry on patients’ glasses
- Assess refractive error by performing a manifest refraction
- Measure intraocular pressure using Goldmann tonometry
- Evaluate for pupillary defects
- Assess color vision
- Conduct confrontation visual field testing
- Evaluate extraocular muscle function
- Assess anterior chamber angles to ensure safe dilation
- Dilate patients in accordance with provider instructions based on the type of exam
- Assist with coordination of collaborative studies in liaison with other departments
- Respond to patients' messages in a timely manner
- Assist team members with other studies as delegated
- Attend CME courses to maintain and enhance ophthalmic technician skills.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing, such as: refraction (including loose lens refraction,) optical coherence tomography (OCT,) static and kinetic visual fields, corneal topography, endothelial cell count, microperimetry, full-field stimulus test (FST,) electroretinography (ERG) and fluorescein angiography (FA) strongly preferred.
