Jefferson Lab seeks an experienced leader with deep familiarity of DOE O413 construction projects to join the talented multi-lab team responsible for designing, building, and commissioning a discovery-potential scientific nuclear physics instrument known as the Electron-Ion Collider.
The EIC Deputy Project Director at Jefferson Lab works in partnership with the EIC Project Office at the host site, Brookhaven National Lab. Reporting to the Jefferson Lab Director, the EIC Deputy Project Director leads a team in the safe and successful execution of Jefferson Lab’s EIC Project scope including detector systems, radio-frequency systems, cryogenic systems, and magnet systems. This person is responsible for delivering the technical performance of JLab’s EIC scope within cost and schedule requirements, and for providing the required project plans and status reports. Serves as a member of the EIC Project’s Executive Management Team.

In addition to directing activities at Jefferson Lab, works in close collaboration with EIC Project team members at BNL and at other partners to ensure seamless coordination of activities and successful execution of the Project. The EIC Deputy Project Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of Jefferson Lab’s EIC project team and supervises, through direct reports and matrix staff, the various Control Account Managers.

In this role you will:

Serve as EIC Deputy Project Director and is a member of the EIC Project’s Executive Management Team and the Integrated Project Team.
Serve as the Lab’s primary project management point of contact with the external partners, the Department of Energy, the host laboratory, and the project team
Lead the planning, design and construction of Jefferson Lab's EIC project scope, including detector systems, radio-frequency systems, cryogenic systems and magnet systems
Provide responsibility for the day-to-day management of Jefferson Lab’s EIC project team and supervises, through direct reports and matrixed staff, the various Control Account Managers and support staff
Execute program plans (quality, risk, communication, staffing, etc.), capture and communicate program status and data in order to maintain accurate and current program information for the use of stakeholders
Serve as a member of the Integrated Project Team (IPT) for the EIC Project, interface with Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Physics, Brookhaven Site Office (BHSO), and Thomas Jefferson Site Office regarding plans, status and progress
Establish and maintain collaborative partnerships with senior management. Serve as a vital link for fostering positive and effective partnerships within and organization as well as the EIC Brookhaven National Laboratory project team. Develop project staffing and resource plans and coordinate closely with lab leadership to ensure that adequate resources are available
As a member of the senior leadership team, contribute to the development of Jefferson Lab’s long-term vision and strategy, while maintaining a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of institutional values, guiding principles and ethics

Qualifications we require:

Education & Experience

Master's degree in an engineering or scientific field and 15 or more years in a relevant technical area of engineering, physics instrumentation or particle accelerator systems, including 5 or more years in a senior management position

Ph.D. degree in an engineering or scientific field and 20 or more years in a relevant technical area of engineering, physics instrumentation or particle accelerator systems, including 5 or more years in a senior management position

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of project management principles and processes and relevant scientific and technical programs Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex technical projects, establish priorities, assess competing resource demands and make decision that optimize project performance
Knowledge of DOE project management policies and requirements
Strong commitment to safety, high standards of ethics and integrity
The ability to effectively lead and manage a team through direct line management as well as a matrix framework
Proficiency in financial analysis, forecasting, analytical writing, and speaking skills with the ability to organize, analyze, and implement complex topics and initiatives, with attention to detail
Capable of handling multiple competing priorities in a complex R&D environment
