The opportunity

  • Conduct research in carbon cycle science and terrestrial biospheric modelling
  • Innovative and collaborative workplace with great flexibility
  • Build your career with Australia's premier scientific organisation

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a vibrant team of international leaders in carbon cycle science and terrestrial biospheric modelling.  You will acquire, develop and benchmark satellite-based biomass products for Australian ecosystems and use satellite-based data to establish the net biospheric balance of Australia and its trends over time. You will use the new biomass data to benchmark Australia’s state-of-the-art terrestrial biospheric model (CABLE), Australia’s Earth system model (ACCESS-ESM) and Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory to provide improved estimates of the carbon stocks and fluxes Australia-wide.

The successful candidate will be someone who wants to work in a team, has keen interest in Earth system science and a strong drive to deliver science in support of Australia’s commitments to Net-Zero by 2050 and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Your duties will include:

  • Acquisition, management, benchmarking, and analysis of satellite-based biomass products (optical, radar, passive microwave) for Australian ecosystems.
  • Development of a carbon stock change-based approach to establish the net biospheric carbon balance of Australia and its trends over time, and comparison to other approaches.
  • Participate in professional scientific discourse: Publish findings in reports and high-impact, internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals; Prepare appropriate conference papers and present those at conferences as agreed with your supervisor; Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature.
  • Communicate their scientific findings to a range of audiences, including research sector professionals, industry, and Government.

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Earth system science, terrestrial carbon cycle science, or remote sensing of the land. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in research in one or more of the following areas
    a.    remote sensing of the land surface (desirable, particularly experience with remote sensing of biomass),
    b.    carbon cycle processes and modelling
  • Strong skills in programming, and familiarity with command-language scripting in Unix or Linux environments.
  • Strong skills in the management of large data sets, and in their analysis.
