The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The senior data analyst/telescope operator is part of the science operations team and will lead a team of up to 5 data analysts/operators to support SKA-Low science operations and development activities during the construction phase.

The senior data analyst/telescope operator will be responsible for the development of operator procedures and documentation, and for the line management, mentoring and training of the data analyst/telescope operators under their supervision.

Your duties will include:

  • Manage performance of the data analyst/operator team including setting milestones and performance goals, managing rosters, providing mentorship and nurturing development.

  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the operator team, providing guidance on work duties.

  • Conduct, monitor and calibrate astronomical observations and use appropriate computing resources towards successful operation of the telescope array releases (when they become available and as required).

  • Lead system checks, maintenance handovers, array and correlator/beamformer configurations and setups.

  • Drive quality assurance of (continuum, spectral line imaging and/or time-domain) data obtained from early array releases and using existing low frequency data sets.

  • Provide guidance and direction to operator oriented software development.

Location:     Perth, Western Australia

Salary:         AU$110,038 - AU$119,080 plus 15.4% superannuation

Tenure:        Indefinite – Full-Time, Part-Time or Job-Share
