What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation’s security? If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection Program is seeking an entry-level Health Physics Dosimetrist for our Radiation Protection Dosimetry program (RPD).

Health Physics Dosimetrists provide technical support in external and/or internal dosimetry via determination of radiological doses and maintaining national accreditations, as well as other Health Physics and Radiological Engineering work, and support of emergent radiological incidents and emergency response situations. Candidates selected for this Health Physics Dosimetrist role will be called upon to provide direct guidance and support to the Health Physics Technologists and/or Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers within RPD and shall be the backup Point of Contact (PoC) in support of the Line Customers that require Dosimetry services.

On any given day, you may be required to:

  • Support other RPD Health Physics/Radiological Engineers in carrying out all Dosimetry services.
  • Direct and supervise the activities of Health Physics Technologists in providing Dosimetry services.
  • Advise to Radiation Protection (RP) and Line Customers on the use of Dosimetry services in experimental and production environments encountered in Sandia’s functional Mission spaces.
  • Advise RP and Line Customers in the appropriate application of Department of Energy (DOE) regulations and orders as well as SNL policies applicable to Dosimetry services.
  • Perform analyses of dosimetric measurements, reviewing analysis results, and monitoring quality and production data for the Dosimetry program.
  • Draft technical documents for the implementation of the Dosimetry program in support of Line Customer projects, as well as for the greater RP program as needed.
  • Participate in internal RP audits and assessments and external audits and assessments as an identified SME for the Dosimetry program as needed.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range:

$81,900 - $157,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or relevant physical science field; or equivalent combination of education and experience; Associate’s degree in previously stated field plus 4 years of relevant experience in Health Physics or Dosimetry, or a High School diploma plus 8 years of relevant experience in Health Physics or Dosimetry .
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A Master’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or similar appropriate physical science plus 3 years of relevant Health Physics, Dosimetry work experience.
  • Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20
  • Experience working in a dosimetry program with/without DOELAP Accreditation.
  • Experience participating in software development and/or database management.
  • Experience with directing and mentoring Health Physics Technologists and other Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers.
  • Experience providing dedicated Dosimetry project management and guidance to RP and Line Customers within the SNL functional Mission spaces.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.
  • Experience in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors.
  • Active DOE “L” or “Q” level security clearance.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the sue of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
