What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Radiation Protection Sample Diagnostics (RPSD) laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Analysis Engineer to join the team. This staff member will be expected to understand and perform routine laboratory operations including sample analysis, instrument calibration, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) administration, quality control and internal assessments.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Assist with and/or conduct special projects and laboratory improvement initiatives.
  • Assist the program leader with program development and day-to-day laboratory operational management.
  • Serve on technical teams to accomplish laboratory improvement projects that will keep the laboratory up to date with corporate and laboratory accreditation requirements, and serve the diverse needs of internal customers, particularly in the areas of Environment, Safety and Health.
  • Interact with customers to develop data quality objectives, assist them with the interpretation of radiological measurement data results and communicate technical information to them and other stakeholders.
  • Partner with researchers and RPSD team members to plan and provide customized laboratory analyses on special research and development projects.
  • Assist with the ongoing LIMS development project to automate new analytical methods and laboratory process and ensure new vendor software features are instituted into operations.In addition to working in the RPSD laboratory, this staff member will also have opportunities to work on special assignments to benefit the larger Radiation Protection Program and associated Radiation Protection Operational groups.
  • Travel on occasion and present technical information at conferences and meetings.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range:

$70,200 - $157,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics, Radiochemistry or related scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience; Associate’s degree in previously stated field plus 4 years of relevant experience, or a High School diploma plus 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Operational experience with radiological laboratory equipment, such as gamma spectrometers, gas proportional counters, or liquid scintillation counters.
  • Experience with the standard Windows IT environment including MS Office products.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • MS in Nuclear Engineering, Health Physics or a closely related scientific field.
  • Databases and reporting software experience (e.g. SQL Server/Oracle, Crystal Reports, etc.).
  • Understanding of radiation interactions with matter and other fundamental radiation detection principles.
  • Ability to clearly convey thoughts, concepts, and directions both verbally and in writing.
  • Self-motivated and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with configuring instrument control software for laboratory measurement equipment, as well as troubleshooting and repair of radiation laboratory equipment hardware and software.
  • Experience with laboratory Quality Assurance processes, method verification, validation, and conduct of operations.
  • Experience with gamma and alpha spectroscopy data interpretation and analysis including nuclide identification and quantification.
  • Experience with performing calibrations on gamma spectrometers (including mathematical efficiency modeling), liquid scintillation counters and gas proportional counters.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection organization supports the mission of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) through development and implementation of sound radiation protection principles for the varied radiological activities performed at SNL. As a component of the Radiation Protection organization, the Radiation Protection Sample Diagnostics (RPSD) Laboratory provides internal and external customers with high-quality radiological and chemical analysis using state-of-the-art equipment and testing methods. RPSD customers include a variety of SNL programs and projects including the Radiation Protection operational groups, SNL Nuclear Facilities, and Pulsed Power Sciences divisions. The laboratory is responsible for the calibration of all detector systems and for maintaining a robust quality assurance program. RPSD also develops and maintains a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to interface between the laboratory and its customers.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
