Job Description

The Helmerich School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Acting and Directing to start in August 2025. This is a nine-month faculty appointment with a 3/3 course load.

Responsibilities:

·      Teach existing undergraduate courses in Introduction to Acting, Character Study for the Actor, Scene Study for the Actor, and Directing 1 & 2.

·      Develop new courses in areas of specialty.

·      Direct productions for the School of Drama, in either the University or Lab Theatre seasons, contributing positively to the pedagogical experiences of actors, designers, dramaturgs, and stage managers; mentor undergraduate student directors.

·      Contribute to advising and recruitment of undergraduate students.

·      Maintain an active research/creative activity profile beyond the local level

·      Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession. 

The Peggy Dow Helmerich School of Drama prepares students to enter the theatrical and entertainment profession with an expanded knowledge of an ever-evolving industry: we nurture creative expression; we embrace the richness of global theatrical traditions in our curricula and on our stages; we empower students to see themselves as agents of change; and we maintain a standard of excellence in all our artistic endeavors. Housed in an R1 research institution, the School of Drama combines the advantages of a liberal arts education with conservatory-style BFA training in Acting, Costume Design, Dramaturgy, Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Stage Management, and Sound Design. The School comprises 25 full-time faculty and staff and 102 majors. We produce 9 University Theatre productions each year in collaboration with the Schools of Dance, Music, and Musical Theatre and 4–6 Lab Theatre productions.

Required qualifications include:

  • An MFA in Acting/Directing and/or a PhD in Theatre/Performance Studies.
  • Experience in the practice and pedagogy of actor training and directing.
  •  A professional profile in theatre, film, and/or television.

Preferred qualifications may include: 

  • Teaching and research/creative experience in global theatre. 
  • Experience directing productions at the university and/or professional level.
  • Experience and/or interest in developing BFA curriculum for emerging professional needs in theatre, film, and television.
  • Active union membership and professional affiliations.
